FORT MONTGOMERY—Minutes before 7 a.m. this morning, authorities reported that a person had jumped off the Bear Mountain Bridge into the Hudson River below.
Several marine units rushed to the scene.
The Bear Mountain Bridge, spanning the Hudson River in New York, has unfortunately been the site of several suicides over the years. Since its opening in 1924, the bridge’s height and accessibility have made it a tragic destination for distressed people. While exact numbers are difficult to track, reports indicate that multiple individuals have leaped from its steel structure, often resulting in fatal outcomes. The chilling history of these incidents has prompted discussions about mental health awareness and suicide prevention measures, including crisis hotlines and barriers. Local authorities continue efforts to prevent further tragedies through increased surveillance and intervention.
Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
